Quilting: An Enduring Craft

Featured in a 2008 exhibit at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, were quilted items from the Colonial Williamsburg collection. One of these artifacts was an exquisitely quilted wool petticoat fashioned between 1755-75. The petticoat featured a detailed pattern of scrolling flowers against diagonal, parallel lines.
Clothing and other textiles were often quilted to increase their warmth, comfort and luxury as has been done for thousands of years. 17th and 18th century quilting adorned artifacts such as stomachers and petticoats, men’s waistcoats and counterpanes for beds. And, in fact, the history of quilted clothes stretches back across the centuries to ancient Egypt.
The meticulous work performed on the Colonial Williamsburg artifacts is a precious record of techniques, design and trade from our past. History, storytelling and family traditions were sewn into textiles, giving descendents a unique perspective on life, both past and present.
But does quilting have the same meaning and functionality today? You bet it does. When grandma gifts you with a quilt that she toiled over for a few months, no doubt you proudly put the treasure on display and treat it with the utmost care.
Quilting for warmth and comfort is still a 21st century need. Stylish quilted coats, jackets and vests are sold by major retailers across the country and worldwide. Additionally, has enjoyed renewed popularity and today's technologically advanced sewing machines give quilters more options and avenues for creativity.
Years from now, grandchildren will still see the value of quilted treasures handed down to them from their ancestors. We will still be wearing quilted clothing for warmth and enjoying the comfort of a cozy quilt draped across our beds. Quilting has endured for thousands of years and will surely be around far into the future.
