About FFQ

"Here I am at the AQS Hobbs Fiber
Fashion Show 2007. Imagine my delight to inform my
husband. He had married a '10'. Eat your heart out
Bo Derek."

FFQ was founded by Joan Derylak, an avid seamstress and quilter.
Joan has been sewing since the age of 7. Her specialty is tailoring,
having tailored a man’s dress suit as well as many ladies business
suits for herself. Joan’s late mother wanted her to major in home
economics at college to teach sewing in high school. In the early
70’s this seemed to lack glamour to Joan, so she majored in math
and minored in management science at the State University of New
York at Geneseo, graduating in 1975. She ended up working as an
accountant for many years and started her own payroll service in
1992, serving over 100 clients. After selling the payroll service
in 1999, she purchased her first brand new sewing machine, a Bernina.
Thinking, boy this is expensive, she wanted to make good use of
it. So she joined Nimble Thimbles Quilting Guild in Mauldin, SC
with a friend in 2000. She have been quilting ever since. She is
also an active member and past board member of Quilters of South
Carolina, the SC state guild. As her children are grown, she and
her husband of 31 years are at the stage to downsize. So her philosophy
is “if I can’t eat it, drink it or wear it, I don’t need it.”
Hence making quiltwear has developed. Specializing in bargello
jackets, she does everything on a foundation base from the same
jacket pattern (see “Jacket Fitting Class in a bag” in the pattern
shop). Joan teaches at many quilt shops in the Carolinas and Georgia.
Her most popular class is the ‘Jacket Fitting Class’. Her classes
include custom fitting, bargello jackets and scrapwear. She has
developed her own quilted jacket pattern as well as design patterns
for six different bargello jackets. She plans to continue teaching, lecturing
and developing new and creative ‘figure flattering quiltwear’.
How FFQ Works
A good fit is essential to making a figure flattering garment.
So Joan has developed three types of quilted jacket patterns,
one without darts for the average figure, one in a princess style
without darts for the petite or slim figure and one with a dart
for the fuller figured woman. These patterns are specifically intended
to be used for quiltwear, and are designed with only a few seams
making the quilt design process easier. Each design pattern comes
with a different jacket pattern included. However,
if you have fitting problems or are a full figured woman, we suggest
you try the Jacket Fitting Class in a Bag. This
pattern is intended to help you get the best fit possible for your
figure. It can be used with ANY quiltwear design pattern you
choose, be it one of ours or something else. It is well worth
the time to get a perfect fit.
